artist statement

My paintings, although representational, concern my reflections on time and memory; constancy and change. I strive to create paintings laden with mood and atmosphere - meditative and contemplative. Redolent with emotion, the images contrast glowing luminosity with a portent of mystery in shadowy depths.

As I've progressed towards creating work evocative of timelessness and transience, I have adopted a many layered technique using a translucent mixture of very thin oil paint and alkyd medium. My painting process has also evolved to allow the physical act of the paint application remain evident. Although my paintings are of real places, the surface quality, the various interactions of layers of paint, and the compositions themselves, possess appealing abstract aspects, and contribute to a sense of history or passage of time.

While painting, I am profoundly affected by music. The concept of being suspended in an atmosphere - be it music, time, a place - compels me. I endeavor to create paintings that will are at once evocative of a sense of passage of time and represent a singular moment in time.
